The latest hot transfer rumour making the rounds is that Liverpool and Man Utd are keen on a player dubbed the “New Steven Gerrard. ” Whether this nickname is appropriate or just a byproduct of Anfield interest remains to be seen, but here’s what we do know. The player in question is Belgian international Steven Defour. He’s the 23-year-old captain of Standard Liege and both Liverpool and United are reported to be interested. Here’s the latest from CaughtOffside. com:Liverpool and Man United are set to enter a bidding war for highly rated Standard Liege star Steven Defour who is tipped to leave his native Belgium this summer. The goalscoring midfielder has been a long term target of Sir Alex Ferguson but now Anfield director of football Damien Comolli has identified the creative youngster as a target. Liverpool certainly need an upgrade in the midfield, especially as Gerrard continues to face injury issues with age. To bring in a rising young midfielder with leadership skills would seriously boost the Reds’ title chances for next season.  As for Manchester United, there’s seemingly no reason to make this move right now. Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to spend big this summer on David De Gea (or another pricey keeper), and it’s well known that the club is in quite a bit of debt. With United already in good form and on pace for at least one trophy, there’s no reason to expect they would shell out for this unproven (albeit promising) commodity. This move makes a lot more sense for the Anfield side, but there’s never a lot of sense in the transfer market to begin with. Still, it seems like a good fit, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Defour winds up at Liverpool this summer. Bleacher Report Rumour Rating: 7/10
